Historic Recognition & Community Legacy

The Glen Choga Lodge, completed in 1935, showcases traditional saddle and notch construction. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Many local families have deep connections to the lodge, with grandparents and parents having worked there when it operated as an inn.

Doug and Terri Matern purchased the lodge in April 2019. It had been on the market for several years following the previous owner's passing and was about to be sold at auction when Doug and Terri made their successful offer. Collaborating with Preservation North Carolina, they have undertaken significant structural and infrastructural work to preserve the lodge.

The lodge's sturdy and formidable structure is built from wormy chestnut logs harvested from the land and surrounding areas. Efforts have been made to maintain the lodge's rustic and simple charm, ensuring it can be shared with those who appreciate its historical significance and enduring beauty.
