One of Glen Choga Lodge’s most unexpected tales involves none other than American hero and astronaut John Glenn. According to the previous owner, Glenn—an old friend—once visited the lodge when it was still rough around the edges. As the story goes, bats had occupied the attic and even entered the hallways. Rather than panic, the two friends grabbed a pair of badminton rackets and turned pest control into a sport, swatting the bats back and forth in an impromptu, airborne game. It was a scene of laughter, agility, and camaraderie, proving that even a man who’d orbited the Earth wasn’t above a good-natured bat battle in the North Carolina mountains. John Glenn, the astronaut from Florida, was invited to the lodge by the previous owner. The previous owner tells the story. It was said that John Glenn, a friend of the last owner, came to visit. Many bats were in the attic, the house, and the hallways. The two men began using badminton rackets to bat the bats about from one to the other.
